Dehumidifiers use specialized hardware to extract humidity from the air. Humidity is essentially water that has evaporated and thus exists as vapor, or in its gaseous form. The easiest way to extract water when it is in a gas form is to bring it back into a solid form that can be controlled and contained, and this is done by using a chilled coil, similar to how your air conditioner works. The moist, humid air passes through this chilled coil, where the vapor quickly condenses into water, collects, and then drains away through a drain line. The air that passes through this coil then comes out rather cool, and that cool air is used to cool a condenser coil that creates the cold refrigerant needed to create the cold coil.
Unfortunately, this means the air that comes from your dehumidifier actually comes out quite hot, and thus it’s best to actually run the air that comes out from your dehumidifier back through your HVAC system to condition it and keep it cool before sending it into your home. You’ll often find dehumidifiers installed with their air intakes and exhausts located inside your HVAC system’s main air return vent.5
